History

Clutton Roger And Pam ChurchThe Parish Church, dedicated to St Augustine of Hippo, has been a House of God and Christian prayer for many centuries. The list of Rectors extends back to 1308 and it is reasonable to conclude that the first building on the present site dates from the twelfth century. The church tower is Norman in style, and contains a fine peal of six bells which are rung regularly for Sunday worship, weddings and funerals. The graveyard is still in use for interments and contains a stone from which John Wesley preached in 1780, having been denied use of the church pulpit.

Church Records

The church has maintained records of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials since medieval times most of which have now been deposited in the Somerset Record Office, Orbridge Road, Taunton. The following records are still held by the parish and may be consulted following prior arrangement with the Rector:

  • Baptisms 1884 to date
  • Marriages 1837 to date
  • Burials 1890 to date

A statutory charge is made for searches in the records and for certified copies of selected entries.

To assist research, a spreadsheet is available with details of the burial plots in St. Augustine’s churchyard.

There is also a section of this web site dedicated to genealogy.
