I know that Somerset parish records are held at Taunton but wondered whether any of your current local historians hold a transcript of birth, marriages , burials for Clutton during 18th c.
I know that James Parfitt married Sarah Price there on 30/12/1764 but want to know if there is a daughter of this marriage, Ann Parfitt, baptised there c1770-1774? The family later moved to Claverton and Timsbury. None of the Clutton parish records is on the usual IGindex and I was not able to get up to London today as hoped to look at the microfiche at The Society of Genealogists.Hope someone may be able to help.

They all lived in Maynard Terrace at no 33 or 34.Freda married Herbert Husher and they had 3 children Roy,Alan and Linda.Joyce married Ronald Wilcox, and they had one son called Desmond.I am not sure who Rita married.Roy Husher used to spend a lot of time in Clutton staying at Maynard Terrace and he attended the local junior school for a time during the war.

My ancestor Thomas Perry, born 1817, a coal miner, was married to Lydia Collier and they lived in Colliers Bottom, Clutton, at the time of the 1841 Census. They moved to South Wales c.1850. I am interested in any information about the families and particularly the location of Colliers Bottom which I cannot find on any map.

    Parker and Amos

Both families trace to 1700′s being born in Clutton (Joseph Parker b 1795) and Jacob Amos b 1790 b. Somerset but was certainly in Paulton by 1814 & 1817 as he had 2 separate daughters each named Lucy christened there ( i assume the first died but have yet to search the burial register). Joseph’s son George was christened in Chew Magna in 1811. George and Lucy (1817)married where?.By 1841 both the families inc all the above appear in the Welsh census for Llangyndir or Bedwellty(nowadays Blackwood)where 2 more generations mined coal which is the connection.

The mass migration to Wales by many Somerset families was not just the expansion of a larger coal field but the demand for experiance of “long face coalmining” a far more efficient one than the traditional Welsh methods.

Anyway any help on these names would be very appreciated as would my daughter whose married name is Churchill whose in law family came from the High Littleton/ Paulton area and arrive in Pontypool area in mid 1800′s – THANKS

My family tree goes back to James Parfrey who was born c1780. I’m not sure as to where he was born (poss Gloucestershire) but by 1851 he was living in Clifton, Bristol. He married Sarah Bibb in Bridgwater, Somerset in 1809. Quite a few of their children were born in Bridwater so they must have lived there before moving to Bristol.

Just wondering if any one knows of any link between the Clutton Parfreys and the Bridgwater/Bristol ones. I have no idea who James’ parents were and would love to find out.

I have recentley started researching my family tree.Clutton is mentioned as the birthplace or residence of many of the family.Does anyone have any information about the Peek family.Alternatively can you suggest any place where I might obtain such information.Thankyou John Peek

We are looking for the family of Robert Parfitt born about 16 Aug 1829 in Clutton, according to the 1861 Wales census. He married Hannah Rosser in Blaina, Wales, on 16 July 1853. His father’s name on the marriage certificate looks like Isaac, but it is very hard to read. He immigrated with his wife and children to USA between 1861 and 1865. Does anyone know of a Robert born around that time in the Clutton area? Thank you in the Lord Jesus. Ken and Jamie Parfitt, Geneseo, NY.

    Purnell
Hi – my great great great grandfather John Purnell was born in Clutton in 1799. I believe he was married twice, first to Mary Ann Chillcott (5 children – John b1826, Samuel b1828, Frances Amelia b1834, Thomas Daniel b1837 and Joseph b1840), then to Elizabeth Winter, nee Hill, (1 child – Frederick b1847). He was a shoemaker and lived most of his life in Bristol. He died in Bristol in 1874.

IGI has John Purnell marrying Elizabeth Chard on 5th July 1824 in Midsomer Norton.

I have found a lot of Purnells from Clutton during the 1700s, but since John Purnell is the link between these Purnells and my family tree, I need to find some evidence that I have the correct John Purnell, or I need to discover how my John Purnell relates to the 18th century Purnells from Clutton.

I was born in England but live in San Francisco, so I would like to get this straight before visiting Somerset to continue my research.

Can anyone help please ? Many thanks.

Hi, I am researching my mothers side of the family, the Parfitts, and Clutton seems to be full of them. I have gone back a fair way, but would like to know more.
Joshua Parfitt, 1867 an ironstone miner from Clutton, moved to monmouthshire about 1890. His Dad George 1809, married Maria Fear 1805,ronald leslie parfitt bakers in Clutton. Georges Mother, Mary 1771, was also a baker along with Georges Dad, but I dont know his name. Can you help me find him please.
If it helps, Mary is listed in the 1851 census, aged 79,as a “proprietor of houses. Many thanks, Tony Williams.

I am given to believe the name Parfitt came from Normandy, at the time of the Norman Conquest of 1066. It seems that the Normans used the names of their estates as part of their name. It also seems, that the name of Parfitt was first found in Somerset, on lands granted to them by Duke William of Normandy, for distinguished assistance at the battle of Hastings. (You know all this of coarse). What I would like to know, is, where in Normandy is, or was Parfitt?

I am looking for information on the PARFITT family. John Moore PARFITT born in Clutton in 1865 married Kate RUDDLE in 1884. They lived at Bendalls Bridge/Church Lane and Green Brook. John worked on the railway, firstly as a Platelayer circa. 1891, then as a Permanent Way Ganger circa. 1911. John and Kate had at least 4 children who appear to have worked in the mines. Their son John was the eldest followed by William Arthur, Ernest Percy and Gertrude. John married Laura FLOWER circa. 1901 and they had 8 children.

I would love to hear from anyone who has any information on the family, railway or mines.
